Europe for Business (EFB) and Institute of Marine Research (IMR) Partner to Address Global Mercury Challenge within the Merfish Project

Leonardo Piccinetti, a distinguished representative of Europe for Business (EFB), conducted a specialized training session at the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) in Bergen, Norway. This training focused on the intricate relationship between mercury and selenium in fish and human health and is a key component of the groundbreaking Merfish Project.

The Merfish Project, a collaborative research initiative, aims to establish a robust network dedicated to tackling the multifaceted challenges posed by mercury contamination on a global scale. By bringing together experts from diverse fields, including analytical chemistry, food safety, and environmental health, the project seeks to develop innovative solutions to mitigate the risks associated with mercury exposure.

“We are thrilled to welcome Leonardo Piccinetti to the IMR and to collaborate with EFB on this vital project,” said Dr Yiou Mike Zhu, postdoctoral fellow of IMR. “The Merfish Project represents a significant step forward in our understanding of the complex interactions between mercury and selenium, and its implications for both environmental and human health”.

Piccinetti’s training session delved into the latest research findings on the health benefits of selenium in mitigating the toxic effects of mercury. Participants gained valuable insights into the mechanisms by which selenium protects against mercury-induced damage, as well as the potential implications for dietary recommendations and public health policies.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to share my expertise with the talented researchers at IMR,” said Piccinetti. “The Merfish Project is a testament to the power of collaboration in addressing critical global challenges. I am confident that our collective efforts will lead to significant advancements in the field of mercury research and ultimately contribute to a healthier and more sustainable future.”
